Lost Childhood Object

Imagining Kailea's childhood object came with many different thoughts. It is easy for me to reflect on my childhood and how I saw things through my own eyes. However, I often forget that other people also reflect on childhood through a different set of eyes. As I prepared to make Kailea's snow globe, I wanted to make sure it had several key details. The first thing that was necessary was the water that allowed the objects to move freely. I wanted to make sure whatever I used could hold water effectively. At first, I considered using a plastic bowl I had, however, I knew it wouldn't mimick the feeling of glass. So, instead I grabbed for a glass jar.

I remember what it was like to have snow globes as a child. While I don't have an exact photograph of what Kailea's snow globe looked like, the emotion she used to describe it and the lit up smile on her face help me understood the feeling behind this snow globe. And as she recreated my night light, she gave me the same joyful emotion and smile back. It is a sweet feeling to have someone create and pour time into something that is so special to you.

MEASURING HISTORIES

I come from a very minimalist family. Our home has always had simplistic and clean decorations with minimal clutter. And with this, we have always kept on to very few sentimental objects and traditions. However, we do have one yearly tradition that requires very little space in storage.  My grandma, who is 100% Swedish, passed on a yearly tradition from her mother and her mother's mother. Every Christmas, they would bake traditional Swedish cookies for all of their neighbors and close friends. And, she would keep butcher paper on the wall to write down recipes, make grocery shopping lists, and create to do lists, displaying it to everyone in the kitchen. After she didn't need the list anymore, she would tear off the paper and write down something new. So, in this project, I wanted to do something similar by displaying her recipes on butcher paper as an art piece.
