RITUAL AND PERSONAL SPACE INSTALLATION
EXPLANATION: For my five day series, I wanted to go on a long walk daily around dusk, and turn around once my adrenaline raised (from the dark or other reasons). Every day, I would set out for a decent length walk around relatively safe areas (Mountain Drive) and see how long it took for me to get "spooked." On the walk back, I would rely on prayer to keep me calm for the remainder of my walk.
DAY ONE On day one, I wanted to keep it simple. I set out near campus, and walked for a while. The sun was quickly setting, and it was fully dark about a mile in. by mile 2.2, I got spooked by a moving animal in the bush, and turned around. On the way back, I prayed out loud and made it safely to campus. Praying out loud helped my fears, along with playing worship music |
DAY TWO
On day two, I drove a few blocks down to the base of Gibraltar Road. This time, I started an hour earlier and hiked almost to the summit. While there were many athletes and bikers out in the beginning, by dusk there were very few, and Gibraltar became erie. So, my nightfall, I was spooked and headed back down. Because of my adrenaline, I prayed while running the 5.5 miles down hill.
DAY THREE
This day I decided to shift and walk along Mountain Drive again. This time, I started early, with hopes of getting far (7+ miles). But, around mile 2, I passed a man carrying a handgun on his holster, and immediately flipped around. Thankfully, the sun was starting to set, so there was plenty of light to return back home before dusk. This time, I relied on prayer even more, asking God to guard me on my return home.
DAY FOUR
After the previous walk, I decided I didn't want to walk on Mountain Drive anymore. So, I shifted back to Gibraltar, this time with pepper spray. This time, I wanted to get to the official summit where I could see the reseviour on the other side. So, I drove further up the road than the time before, started an hour before sun set, and made it. I hung out at the top until I felt spooked, and returned back down. Again, it was quiet and lonely, so I prayed while running.
DAY FIVE
For my last day, I decided to hike again, before shifting to a run for the second half. I was curious what it would be like to run and pray at the same time. So, I started my hike when it was almost completely dark, and than ran on my way back. I was able to think more clear and not be distracted by different elements around me. I have decided, whenever I am struggling with prayer, to shift to a prayer run.
